Isn’t it deceptive how romantic comedies and novels often leave us with the notion that “happily ever after” is the end of the story when relationships don’t always follow that neatly packaged formula? As much as we yearn for the fairy tale ending, the truth is that the journey doesn’t stop once the couple gets together. In fact, that’s often just the beginning.
Many of us experience the highs and the lows of life’s unexpected twists. From marital disagreements to blended families, from moments of intimacy to facing the complex dynamics with in-laws, many of these aspects of life are challenges that come with joining two distinct lives together. These obstacles can often leave us feeling misunderstood, alone, or even hopeless. But happy couples have conflicts. This doesn’t mean the love is gone; it simply means that growth is necessary.
I’ve learned that the real key to overcoming these challenges is understanding your cycle—the patterns of behavior and communication that emerge in your relationship. How do you and your partner interact during moments of tension? It’s through this process of uncovering the cycle and working together to change it that a deeper, more meaningful connection is formed. Relationships are not static; they evolve with time, and the goal isn’t perfection but understanding.
I work with couples from an Emotionally Focused and Spiritually Integrated approach where we dig into the underlying emotions and needs of each partner. I lean into your expertise on your own life by collaborating with you to identify what works best for your unique relationship. You determine your path forward. Through this collaboration, I am always eager to learn what you hope to get out of couples counselling and what you need from me as your therapist.
